The
Ancient Egyptian term for 'Pyramid' was 'mer'.
The pyramids are characteristic of Egypt.
They were believed to be 'staircases to the after life' that protected the
pharaohs and placed them nearer to the sun-god Ra
According to the Pyramid texts, the earliest Egyptian funerary texts
were engraved
on the walls of the chambers of the five pyramids of Saqqara.
The
pharaoh's destiny was linked to that of the sun, as the pharaohs built these
great monuments in the belief that this would bring them nearer to the sun-god Ra.
Khufu (c.
2613 - 2494 BC) placed the first stone for building the great pyramid. He
decided to build the largest pyramid in the world, which took nearly twenty
years to complete and required vast amount of stone and labour as well as
extraordinary organisational skills.
Although the old kingdom did not have the advantage of the wheel, the pyramid of
Khufu was the almost perfect result of tried and trusted techniques, proving
that human genius can rise to any challenge.
